Volunteer advisers are the key in helping CAB clients solve their problems; whether in a bureau, at the end of a telephone, responding to letters, at an outreach session or even in someone's own home.
They see at first hand how so many people cope with enormous problems, with serious disability and long-term sickness, with unemployment, relationship breakdowns, with money problems and threat of losing their homes.
Our advisers learn a great deal from meeting many different clients and so, as a bureau, we are able to contribute to the social policy work of our national organisation. This task highlights injustices and influences government legislation. All our volunteer advisers are fully trained. You do not need to have any particular qualification or experience, but the following abilities are key to the role
ARE YOU a good listener, looking for a challenge?
CAN YOU be understanding without being critical?
ARE YOU able to be open-minded about other people's lifestyles, values and beliefs?
DO YOU like searching out information?
CAN YOU explain complex procedures and information in a simple but non patronising way?
ARE YOU willing to learn, perhaps re-learn, interviewing techniques for the CAB?
ARE YOU prepared to start your training from scratch, whatever your experience, as a trainee working under supervision?
CAN YOU offer at least 6-8 hours a week?
CAN YOU work as part of a team?
If you answered YES to most of these questions, then why not consider joining the voluntary sector by becoming a CAB adviser - a really challenging and rewarding occupation that makes a difference to the local community?
We also need volunteers to help us as Trustees, with administration, social policy or with occasional gardening or D.I.Y.
